Deadly Flash Floods Swamp Auckland: State of Emergency Declared

Jan 28 (Reuters) – Authorities in New Zealand’s biggest city, Auckland, began mopping up on Saturday after torrential rains brought flash flooding and evacuations, with at least two people confirmed dead and two missing in the widespread inundation.

A state of emergency remained in place in the city of 1.6 million people on New Zealand’s north island as the rains eased after Friday’s flooding in the north, northwest and west.

Rainfall amounts ranged from 1 to 2 inches per hour for three to four hours, and parts of the city ended up with more than 10 inches in less than a day.

Auckland International Airport set a daily, monthly and all-time 24-hour rainfall record, accumulating 9.80 inches of rain Friday. The previous 24-hour record was only 6.37 inches, set on Feb. 16, 1985. [FOX]

BBC News- New Zealand’s largest city has declared a state of emergency after torrential rain prompted widespread flooding and evacuations.

Friday’s downpour in Auckland shifted houses, stalled traffic and cut power to homes and businesses.

The city is said to have received 75% of its usual summer rainfall in just 15 hours.

“The impacts of the last 24 hours will be felt by many in Auckland for a long time,” said the national forecaster.

“State of emergency declared as 382 tourists and staff trapped at Milford”

A state of emergency has been declared in Fiordland after flooding cut off State Highway 94, the only road out of Milford Sound, leaving 382 tourists and workers stranded.

Hundreds of people “will spend the night trapped in Milford Sound after torrential rain caused slips and flooding, closing the only route in and out,” a report said.

“There is extensive damage from Lake Gunn to the Homer Tunnel, which will delay us opening this road quickly, and there is still a section we haven’t inspected due to bad weather preventing a flyover,” NZ Transport Agency journey manager Peter Brown said.

Thousands of people still trapped in Golden Bay

Thousands of residents and tourists are trapped in Golden Bay and Collingwood have been cut off as State Highway 60, the only way out of the area, has closed in several places due to rain caused slips.

Dozens of other roads and “state highways” have been closed including SH73 near Kumara, SH1 in Kaikōura, north and south, due to flooding, slips and major damage. SH6 has also been closed between Westport and Greymouth due to flooding.

A 60-metre section of SH1 between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay was destroyed after being undermined by sea swells from ex-Cyclone Gita.

Hundreds of schools and early learning centres remain closed throughout Canterbury, Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, Waikato, Taranaki, Whanganui, Manawatu and Otago, as lingering thunderstorms over the west coast of the South Island are expected to move on to Wellington.

Thousands of residents in Nelson, Tasman, Canterbury… have also been evacuated.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of homes in Tasman and Taranki are without power and multiple states of emergency have been declared…

There are reports of localised “flooding in Motueka, Takaka and Marahau, significant flooding in the Riwaka Plains.”

Milk, bread, canned goods, candles, bottled water and toilet paper “as well as other essentials have been cleared out of Takaka as the Tasman town is cut off and trucks with supplies are unable to reach them for days.”

Total cost of damage caused by Gita could exceed $300 million, informed sources have told the blog.

Megan Sarah Louise Walton, 27, of no fixed address, appeared in Hamilton District Court on Monday and pleaded guilty to behaving in an insulting manner that was likely to cause violence and to two charges of common assault.

She was bailed after appearing in the Hamilton District Court on Monday to reappear in court today to confirm a bail address. Outside the court, she gave waiting reporters a one finger salute.

The judge has ordered a Section 38 psychiatric report prior to sentencing on 11 April.
