Only 4,644 skilled skilled migrants applied for residence in the 6-month period, compared to 9,150 in the same period last year, according to Immigration New Zealand figures.

TWO KILLED in SECOND FATAL AUCKLAND POLICE CHASE in TWO WEEKS (AT LEAST 13th NATIONALLY SINCE JAN.)

 Connor Talaimanu, 29, and Sharina Storm Meuli, 25, were killed during a “chase-to-kill” police operation. A silver VW Golf driven by a 22-year-old male crashed into a tree in the Auckland suburb of Morningside.

Two weeks ago, south Auckland teen Morocco Tai, “a marked youth offender” was effectively “extrajudicially” executed by police. The car he was driving ploughed into a tree in Ōtara during a police “chase-to-kill” operation on October 9. He should have been under proper supervision.

“How many people have to die in these crashes before police get it right?” said Auckland’s Michelle Toko, whose daughter Amber, 21, was killed by a driver being chased by police 14 years ago.

She said the latest fatal crash shows police chase tactics must change.

About 100 mostly young people have been killed in police chase-to-kill operations in recent years.

Magnitude 5.4 quake strikes 10km west of Kaikoura

A strong earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude struck 10km west of Kaikoura at a depth of 13km, Geonet said.

Why do our lagoons look like sewer ponds?

Samples collected from the Tomahawk lagoon in Dunedin have confirmed presence of toxic blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) prompting a warning from the Otago Regional Council (ORC) for people (and dogs) to avoid contact with the waters of the lagoon.

ORC was informed of the toxic bloom presence in the lagoon yesterday by a “citizen scientist” working there yesterday, prompting them to place signs at the lagoon today to warn the public of the risks associated with the bloom, which has high levels of cyanobacteria.

“The lagoon discharges into the stream running onto the beach, so beachgoers should take care in this area.

“Cyanobacteria can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals if swallowed or through contact with skin. Exposure to cyanobacteria may cause symptoms such as skin rashes, nausea, tummy upset, and tingling and numbness around the mouth or tips of fingers.

“Anyone experiencing health symptoms after contact with contaminated water should visit their doctor. Public Health South is available on (03) 4769800 to provide health professionals with information about those symptoms.”
