The Final Destination: Chinese male violently killed in Mt Cook crash

42- year-old Qin Li of China was the driver violently killed in a crash on Tekapo-Twizel Road at Mount Cook on Wednesday 29 August.

Two other people were seriously injured and a third had moderate injuries due to the crash.

“South Canterbury locals are now asking the NZ Transport Agency to improve the notoriously bad intersection after the death of Li,” a report said. [HA HA HA…]

A volunteer firefighter, who was one of the first responders at the crash, said it was just one in a long list of serious accidents at the intersection and the second fatal one he had attended.

“Last year, local schoolteacher Sandy Nelson launched a petition calling for changes to the intersection. [However,] despite the petition getting more than 800 signatures, appropriate action wasn’t taken,” the report said.

A motorcyclist has died following a crash in Eyrewell Forest, Waimakairi this evening. The crash occurred at the intersection of Poyntzs Road and South Eyre Road shortly after 8pm.
The crash involved a motorcycle and a car. While a man died in the crash one person in the car also received critical injuries.

Person dies following New Plymouth crash

A person has died following a crash in New Plymouth that occurred early yesterday morning. The car, containing four people, crashed into a wall at 1.30am on Wednesday 29 August.
A 22-year-old man was transported to Taranaki Base Hospital in a critical condition and sadly died at around 4pm yesterday.
Three people remain in hospital – one in a critical condition and two with serious injuries.

“In the attic of his Sussex Inlet home in New South Wales, his car, his holiday caravan and a south coast motel, the 71-year-old man inflicted varying levels of sexual predation on the grandchildren entrusted to his care; plying them with drugs and alcohol and using them for the production and dissemination of child exploitation visuals,” a report said.

Young American woman Lauren “Kimi” Worrell, 28, who was horrifically killed on 19 August 2018 at Castle Rock, was probably the 4,751st foreigner to meet a horrific end in NZ since 2010. Most of the deaths were avoidable.

Young American woman Lauren “Kimi” Worrell was horrifically killed on 19 August 2018 at Castle Rock. Her family have released the following statement through NZ police and also provided the attached photo for media use.

RIP. Lauren “Kimi” Worrell was a 28-year-old American living in Auckland. Her tragic death, like that of thousands of other foreign victims studying or visiting NZ, was totally unnecessary and avoidable. Unfortunately, the odds were heavily stacked against her.

Lauren “Kimi” Worrell was a 28-year-old American living in Auckland. She’d just finished her Masters degree from the University of Auckland, getting an A+ on her thesis “New Directions for Sustainable Transport Policy in Auckland”, an area in which she intended on working. She was an avid outdoors enthusiast and rock-climber.

Kimi passed away on 19 August 2018 whilst preparing to descend a challenging 120m rock face at Castle Rock. The matter is still being investigated by the Coroner, however the family wish to highlight a safety risk to those in the climbing community.   The family ask climbers to consider very carefully their reliance on equipment left permanently fixed to rock faces, and the condition of this equipment. This equipment will naturally be affected by UV rays and other elements of nature effecting its condition and reliability.   There will be a private memorial service held on Sunday to celebrate Kimi’s life.

A Rahui has been placed on Castle Rock until it can be lifted by local iwi next week.   The family have travelled from California. They would like to thank the two rock climbers who attempted a rescue, the Kuaotunu Land Search and Rescue Team who assisted on the day, members of the New Zealand Police, the US Consulate, and friends in New Zealand.   The local community is organizing a fund in Kimi’s memory, the proceeds of which will be used for the purpose of maintaining existing hardware and fixed lines in rock-climbing areas around New Zealand. We are working to make climbing accessible and safer to everyone, and to prevent avoidable deaths like this in the future. It was particularly painful to read again the highlights of your research on visitors deaths:

New Zealand occupies positions 1 to 7 of the world’s 10 Worst Holiday Destinations because…

• Exposure to excessive UV radiation
• Exposure to deadly chemicals
• Exposure to viral infections
• Unsanitary food, accommodation
• Exposure to sewage contaminated beaches and waterways
• Little or NO access to even rudimentary medical facilities in the case of record numbers of deadly road crashes, and inordinate number of deaths and near-fatal injuries caused by using defective equipment for climbing, tramping, paragliding, bungy jumping, skiing, canoeing, diving and all other mountain, snow, water sports and outdoor activities
• Deadly roads!
• Defective, old, poorly maintained rental cars, quad-bikes, jet skis, and all other sports equipment
• Inadequate or NO supervision in venues where extreme sports are touted
• [Unfit, unqualified instructors or otherwise those operating under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.]
• Little or NO warning posted in dangerous  places and unsafe areas that pose a life threat, or serious injuries, to the visitors, but are invariably advertised as “popular hot spots” to lure unsuspecting foreign visitors

“New Zealand [reported] suicide rate highest since records began”

The REPORTED suicide rate  in NZ jumped  to 13.67 in the year to June 2018 from 12.64 in previous year. At least 668 people [possibly as many as 1,670] committed suicide in the past year. That’s 62 more than last year.

The latest rigged suicide statistics, released by the Ministry of [IN]Justice, were the highest level since the statistics were first recorded in 2007 and have increased for the fourth consecutive year.

Mental Health in NZ

• Māori men continue to be disproportionately represented, 97 died by suicide in the past year, 12 per cent more than last year.
• Female suicides increased by 44 compared to the year before – a 30 per cent increase to 193. While there were 475 males who died by suicide, 18 more than 2017.
• The 20-24-year-old group had highest rate with 76 suicides, followed by the 45-49-year-old group with 67 deaths.
• The reported number of suicides have more than doubled in Northland since 2007, jumping  from 19 to 41.

A Vietnam War veteran has been jailed for just over 12 years for raping his three granddaughters, a report said.

“Aged between six and eight, the girls were violated over a two year period between the start of 2016 and November 2017.”

Instead of being given additional jail time for murdering, or facilitating rape and murder of Vietnamese women and children, his sentence was actually reduced “following a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder after his war experience,” the report said.

French tourist Anne-Marie Scaglione-Genet was killed while descending from Gertrude Saddle in January 2017. She slipped and fell over the edge of a waterfall in The Gertrude Saddle Track in the Fiordland National Park. But her death could have been prevented if the Department of Conservation had acted sooner to add more markers and signs to the deadly track, a coroner has found.

• In March 2016, Israeli soldier Udy Brill, 31, was killed in a fall in the same area. “His body was found at the bottom of a waterfall, he also suffered a massive head injury.”
• Australian tourist James Poland, 48, was also killed while tramping in Fiordland in 2011. >His body was found on the Gertrude Saddle.
• German tramper Christine Lenicker, 29, was killed in 2015. Her body was uncovered on the western side of the Homer Tunnel carpark after snow had melted.

Climber saw partner from the U.S. fall 120m to her death

A 28-year-old U.S. woman fell about 120 metres to her death while climbing Motutere/ Castle Rock, a popular cliff face on the Coromandel Peninsula, a report said.

The incident occurred around 10am on Sunday 19 August near Whitianga, where the woman reportedly died from “non-survivable injuries.”

“Inquiries are ongoing to understand the circumstances of the death which is being treated as unexplained. No further information is available at this stage,” police said.

Truck crash in Nelson SH6 – road closed

A large truck towing two trailers has rear-ended a stationary parked truck on SH6, Tahunanui, Nelson this morning at around 4.20am.

The single occupant driver has been extracted by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) and taken to hospital. There is no current status update for the driver.

The stationary truck was parked up and loaded with batteries for scrap. The contents of this truck, batteries and acid, have spilled all over the road and the road is blocked.

“A cyclist who crashed in Timaru on the weekend has died in hospital. Shortly after midnight on Sunday 12 August 2018, a 37-year-old woman riding a bicycle crashed on June Street.

“She suffered serious head injuries and was taken to the Intensive Care Unit at Timaru Hospital.”

The victim has since been identified as Jane Walsh, a partner at Timaru law firm, Gresson Dorman & Co.

Korean nurse still missing, worst is feared

Was the Korean woman abducted, raped and murdered?

We sincerely hope “the most likely scenario” doesn’t apply to her disappearance!

The Korean nurse Mi-Sook Yang, known as Annie, who has been missing since Thursday 9th August.

Annie’s name is not Yong Ho Shin as previously reported, police said, but they failed to explain why they got her name so wrong in the first place.

Annie’s disappearance is out of character and her family have serious concerns for her welfare, police said.

“Annie was last known to be in the Pukete area of Hamilton at around 5pm on Thursday and hasn’t been seen since.”

If anyone has abducted her, and she’s still alive, please don’t harm her. Let her go back to her family. They need her!

Annie is married with two children, and has been making a positive contribution to her community working as a nurse.

Driver killed in Inglewood school bus crash

NZ buses, cars and roads are fatally unsafe, as we have been saying for years!

The male school bus driver was killed in a crash on State Highway 3 in Inglewood yesterday.

“There were 13 passengers aged 12-17 on the bus at the time of the crash. Ten passengers have been taken to Taranaki Base Hospital where they are being assessed. Three other passengers were taken to a local Media Centre to be assessed,” police said.

The fatal crash was the third bus crash to cause death and/or injury since July 28.
The driver has since been statistically resurrected by the Ministry of Resurrection. The officially cooked death toll remains at 229 since August 5. Based on the road fatality reports by police, there have been at least 182 resurrections so far this year.
