A vehicle has finally been recovered from the Buller River, following a crash on Saturday, police said, raising the Saturday’s road [and river] toll to at least five.

Urgent shellfish warning for Waikato west coast, Raglan Harbour

Shellfish biotoxin alert: Do NOT eat shellfish from Waikato west coast:

The warning includes Waikato River mouth (Port Waikato) southwards to Papanui Point which is just south of Raglan Harbour and Raglan Harbour.

The Ministry for Primary Industries  (MPI) has detected alarming levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning toxins in the area. They have warned that cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) today issued a public health warning against collecting shellfish on the Waikato west coast due to Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins being detected at levels of concern. The affected area includes the Waikato River mouth (Port Waikato) southwards to Papanui Point which is just south of Raglan Harbour. The warning includes Raglan Harbour.

Routine tests on shellfish samples taken from this region have shown levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) toxins above the safe limit (!) of 0.8 mg/kg set by MPI.  Anyone eating shellfish from this area is potentially at risk of illness.

Mussels, oysters, tuatua, pipi, toheroa, cockles, scallops, catseyes, kina (sea urchin) and all other bivalve shellfish should not be eaten.

Note: Cooking shellfish does not remove the toxin.

Pāua, crab and crayfish may still be eaten if the gut has been completely removed prior to cooking, as toxins accumulate in the gut. If the gut is not removed its contents could contaminate the meat during the cooking process.

Symptoms typically appear between 10 minutes and 3 hours after ingestion and may include:

• numbness and a tingling (prickly feeling) around the mouth, face, and extremities (hands and feet)
• difficulty swallowing or breathing
• dizziness
• headache
• nausea
• vomiting
• diarrhoea
• paralysis and respiratory failure and in severe cases, death.

If anyone becomes ill after eating shellfish from an area where a public health warning has been issued, phone Healthline for advice on 0800 61 11 16, or seek medical attention immediately. You are also advised to contact your nearest public health unit and keep any leftover shellfish in case it can be tested.

Monitoring of toxin levels will continue and any changes will be communicated accordingly. Commercially harvested shellfish – sold in shops and supermarkets, or exported – is subject to strict water and flesh monitoring programmes by MPI to ensure they are safe to eat.

Fiordland claims two more climbers

Two climbers from an alpine climbing group who were killed in Fiordland have been named as Conor Smith and Sarwan Chand [nationality undisclosed,] said reports.

At least two more foreigners killed in New Zealand

“Killed swimmer Leslie Gelberger’s ‘romantic day’ with wife for her birthday ended in tragedy”

Gelberger’s body was found floating in Mairangi Bay on Friday afternoon, a day before his wife’s 40th birthday. One of his legs was missing.

Police were investigating whether he was hit and killed by a pilot boat, owned by Ports of Auckland.

“Leslie Gelberger, his wife Laura McLeod, and their two sons moved to New Zealand from Canada three years ago,” said a report.

Paraglider Killed in Queenstwon

A paraglider was killed after crashing in Queenstown around 10am this morning, police said.

The victim was the second paraglider killed in New Zealand in 4 days. The other paraglider was killed in Canterbury on Wednesday.

“A critically endangered native sea lion has been killed by a gunshot wound in the South Island,” said a report citing the Department of Conservation (DOC.)

The male New Zealand sea lion (rapoka), reportedly one of just 10,000 remaining, was found by passersby in Jack’s Bay in the Catlins, near Invercargill.

Who stiffed New Zealand Air Force?

The Air Force brass are scratching their balls after one of their NH90 helicopters  was forced to emergency landing near Blenheim on Sunday.

They are still investigating what caused problems to the engine, but decided it wasn’t good news.

They have stopped flights to areas where emergency landings were not possible, including  cities, mountains  and water.

“The fleet of eight NH90s were ordered by the previous [equally corrupt] Labour government for $771 million in 2006,” said a report.

In 2015 the NZD was unable to take any of its NH90 helicopters to the Pacific Islands after Cyclone Pam because they were considered too difficult to transport and were not yet cleared for “island-hopping”.

Assaulted Auckland taxi driver demands access to cab footage of attack on him

An Indian taxi driver who was assaulted in his cab by three men is being blocked by his employer from seeing the security video footage of the attack on him.

A 16 year-old local boy who had gone for a run was hit by a train and killed early this morning at Ranui Train Station.

“International online gamers allegedly defrauded by a Blenheim man say they are frustrated police do not seem to be taking their concerns seriously. The group of gamers say a group member, Jeffrey Meikle, tricked them into thinking his house had been flattened by November’s Kaikoura earthquake,” said a report.
“The Privateer’s Alliance group say they complained to both Blenheim police and Interpol in late December, but nothing had eventuated from it.”

Another strong earthquake rattles the top of the South Island

A strong earthquake rattled the top of the South Island early early this morning, followed by  several aftershocks. The 4.6 magnitude quake occurred at 4.13am, centred 30km northeast of St Arnaud at a depth of 7km, GeoNet said.  At least 323 felt reports were received within an hour or so.

“That quake was followed by a magnitude 4.0 quake in the same area at 4.51am at a depth of 21km, then a magnitude 3.0 at 10km depth, a magnitude 3.3 shake at a depth of 10km at 5.11am, and a magnitude 3.6 aftershock at 5.34am at a depth of 13km,” said a report.

Woman suffers facial and skull fractures during burglary at her home in Palmerston North

A 26-year-old woman arrived home around 10:40am to find her house being burgled. She was then assaulted and suffered facial and skull fractures.
