Three more Americans killed in “violent” collision in New Zealand

Posted by te2ataria on March 12, 2015

Too difficult to hide death of “prominent” Americans in “News Islands”

Three holidaying Americans were killed in a “violent” collision with a truck west of Hamilton overnight, and a fourth victim, the 56-year-old male driver, was injured, Waikato Police has finally revealed.

The four U.S. visitors were prominent, well-known members of the Church of Latter Day Saints in the settlement of Richfield, and nearby Monroe, about 2.5 hours from Salt Lake City, said a report.

Ruth and Mitchel Peterson killed in New Zealand
Ruth Ann and Mitchell Peterson were violently killed in a collision with a truck  south of Hamilton, New Zealand.

An off-duty policeman on his way home was the first person to arrive at the crash scene at the intersection of SH39 (Kakaramea Rd) and Tuhikaramea Rd, police said.

The four victims in the car were all wearing seatbelts and it wasn’t a case of pointing the finger at tourists, the policeman was quoted as saying.

“That officer raised the alarm and began administering first aid until the arrival of paramedics. The crash is currently being investigated by a raft of teams including the Serious Crash and Commercial Vehicle Investigation Units who are working to confirm what has occurred,” he said.

“Initial indications are that a blue Toyota Highlander car with four persons on board heading north on SH39 has turned right, across the path of a southbound truck and trailer unit, at the intersection with Tuhikaramea Rd.”

US citizens husband and wife, Ruth-Ann and Mitchell PETERSON of Monroe in Utah and Tamara Garlick BARNETT of Richfield which is also in Utah, were killed, police said.

“The 56-year-old male driver, who was travelling with Mrs Barnett, was taken to Waikato Hospital by ambulance with moderate injuries. The driver of the truck was understandably shaken by his ordeal but uninjured in the crash.”

Tamara Garlick Barnett was killed husband Richard sustained injuries
Tamara Garlick Barnett was also killed in the violent crash and her husband Richard sustained unspecified injuries.

Dr Barnett is an orthodontist and director of Barnett Orthodontics in Richfield, and together the couple have four children and four grandchildren. Mitchell Peterson was also a doctor in Richfield, practising optometry, said the report.

In February,  a family of four Chinese Americans were killed in a head-on collision with a logging truck north of Tokoroa. Warren Lee, 53, Aesoon Lee, 52, and their daughter 20-year-old Julia Lee were killed at the scene. Their son, Griffin Lee, 17, died later in hospital.

Father dies weeks before son’s body found
“The father of a teenage climber who was lost on Canterbury’s Tasman Glacier more than 40 years ago died just weeks before the discovery of what is believed to be his son’s body.

“David Moen was 19 when he was swept away by an avalanche near the Tasman Saddle on September 16, 1973. Moen, of Invercargill, had been climbing with Australian William Richards, 64, said a report.

Many people have lost their lives on NZ mountains. At least 62 people have gone missing in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park alone since 1907 and never been found. However, seasonal melting of the Tasman Glacier this year has so far revealed the remains of a second missing climber.

“The second set of human remains was recovered last week from the bottom of the Hochstetter ice fall as it entered the Tasman Glacier. No details on the possible identity of that person were available yet but police said the two discoveries were from separate incidents and not related.”

Keys taken off tourist who caused back up to take photos
A Dunedin vigilante [“nutter”] took car keys from a tourist who had stopped to take photos on Otago Peninsula, causing eight vehicles to back up on the narrow road, said a report.

“It is at least the fifth time a driver has taken the keys off an overseas tourist in recent weeks, with police urging the public not to take matters into their own hands.”

At least 95.8 percent of all fatal crashes on New Zealand “death roads” are caused by kiwi drivers.
