Sixth fatality following White Island deadly eruption
Another person has died following the deadly eruption on White Island, bringing the official toll to six. The person was earlier being treated at Middlemore Hospital, police said.

White Island eruption – [At least FIVE Dead,] eight people unaccounted for:
“Work has continued overnight to respond to the eruption on Whakaari / White Island.
“Enquiries with tour operators indicate that 47 people were on the island at the time of the eruption.
“Police can now advise that in addition to the five people confirmed deceased, eight people remain unaccounted for following the eruption.
“Casualties have been moved to hospitals around the country for specialist care.
“Thirty-one patients are currently being treated at seven hospitals.
“Three patients have been treated and discharged from Whakatane Hospital.
“Rescue helicopters, the Police Eagle helicopter, and NZDF aircraft have undertaken a number of aerial reconnaissance flights over the island since the eruption, and further reconnaissance flights will be undertaken this morning.
“Both New Zealanders and overseas tourists are involved, including 37 passengers and one crew member from the Ovation of the Seas cruise ship.”

According to police, health authority officials and media sources:
Six people have already been confirmed as dead, with another eight missing, presumed dead, following the eruption of Whakaari/White Island on Monday afternoon.
An ash plume about 3,650 metres above the volcano was visible from the mainland.
“Many of the other 30 people injured have life-threatening burns and lung damage. Some are on ventilators and may need skin grafts,” a report said.
The injured are aged 13 to 72, and most are foreign nationals visiting New Zealand.
At least 47 people were on the island when it erupted. They were from seven countries – 24 from Australia, two from China, four from Germany, one from Malaysia, five from New Zealand, two from the UK and nine from the US.
Counties Manukau DHB chief medical officer Dr Pete Watson earlier said 25 of the injured were in regional burns units in Christchurch, Hutt Valley, Waikato and Middlemore hospitals.
Six patients were being treated in Auckland and Tauranga and would be transferred to a burns unit when there was capacity. “All of our burns units are now full to capacity,” he said.
Some 27 of the injured have sustained burns to more than 30 per cent of their body.
“Many have inhalation burns that require airway support,” Watson said.
Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said “up to three” of the five people confirmed dead may be Australian. Also, an Australian family-of-four is among the missing.
“Anthony Langford, 51, and Kristine Langford, their son, Jesse, 19, and daughter Winona, 17, from Sydney, were believed to have been on the island at the time of the eruption and had been marked as missing on the Family Links website.”
