Samoan seasonal worker on holiday killed in collision with truck, 10 others injured on Napier-Taupō Rd

A Samoan man in his late thirties is dead and 10 others are injured after a horror crash on the Napier-Taupo highway between a van and a truck.
Two people are in a critical condition and another eight are in serious to moderate conditions.

In the van were 10 Samoan workers who were a part of the recognised seasonal employer scheme, and one New Zealander. All were on their way to a Taupō [one of NZ’s top tourist deathtraps] for a holiday.
Five people were transported to Hawke’s Bay Hospital – one critically injured person was airlifted and one with serious injuries and three with moderate injuries were taken by ambulance.
A Hawke’s Bay District Health Board spokeswoman said a male teenager remained in a critical condition in intensive care on Monday afternoon.
Four more men, two in their 20s, and one in their 30s and 40s, were in a stable condition.
A man in his 40s in a critical condition was airlifted to Gisborne Hospital.

October 19, 2020: A Samoan worker in his 30s was killed in a collision involving a van and truck near Tarawera.

May 16, 2020: Maja Eve Sanders, 20, Joshua Tom Van Hooijdonk, 19, killed in a  crash at Te Pohue.

March 6, 2020: Aniwaniwa Kenrick, 21, killed in a collision between Kawaro Roadway and Turangakumu Rd at Te Haroto.

December 23, 2019: Leo Thomas Chittenden from Napier and 11-year-old Te Whararere Hunuhunu of Ōpōtiki. The pair were killed in a crash near Rangitaiki.

December 6, 2019: Nathaniel Olson, 40, and Mere Paranihi, 29, were killed at Te Pohue while travelling on a motorcycle.
