Den Thi Baird was killed in a “freak accident” when the car she was in rounded a bend and flipped onto its roof after a large poplar tree fell across on State Highway 1 about 30 kilometres north of Dunedin at 12.09pm on Thursday.
Baird, 51, had fled the Khmer Rouge regime in her native Cambodia.

Taranaki: Homicide investigation launched following death
Taranaki Police have commenced a homicide investigation following the death of an Opunake man last night.
Police had previously been called to a private property in Opunake at about 4.20am on Wednesday 4 November after reports of an altercation between two men who were known to each other.
One of the men, aged 25, was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital in a critical condition and has now died.

A man’s body has been found in the Waikawa River, at Progress Valley, south-east Southland.
It was believed that the man had been whitebaiting in the area and went missing on Friday, police said.
