Why ports boss Tony Gibson should resign over workplace deaths
Apr 04 2021
OPINION:
– Palaamo Kalati, a father of seven with a “big grin and even bigger heart” was crushed to death under a container.

– Laboom Midnight Dyer, dad to toddler Noah, fell 11 metres while driving a straddle carrier, which pick up and carry freight.

– Leslie Gelberger, an ocean swimmer, teacher and father of two, was fatally struck by a speeding pilot boat.

This is the grim roll call of recent deaths at the country’s biggest port, in central Auckland.

Argentine man may need 2nd surgery for broken jaw after unprovoked attack during Wellington holiday Mar 31 2021

The Argentinian national says he would never wants to return to Wellington [and presumably NZ] after being left with a broken jaw in an unprovoked attack while on holiday.

Mauro Fernandez, 26, who underwent surgery in Wellington Hospital required two titanium plates inserted into his jaw after he was punched in the face by a stranger while walking back to his hostel.

He is in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, and two months on from the incident, he believes he will have to undergo a second surgery to realign his jaw.

Fernandez reportedly “lost 7 kilograms from being unable to eat properly for weeks and said ongoing pain and subsequent lack of sleep left him feeling depressed.”
