The man, believed to be a wealthy foreigner, suffocated after being unable to free himself from a “complex” home-made device while masturbating, a Dunedin coroner has ruled.
The death has sparked warnings from the coroner for members of the “kink community” to be aware of the high risk involved in suppressing a person’s breathing.
In a report released on Tuesday, coroner Alexandra Cunninghame concluded his death was not due to suicide but an accident resulting from “a solo kink activity” known as autoerotic asphyxiation.
The middle-aged man, who has name suppression, died on his property in 2019.

Steel worker killed at Christchurch factory named – Nov 25 2020
A man killed while working at a steel factory in Christchurch has been identified as Chesco J. Krueger. [A German national?]
It is believed Krueger was killed by a piece of steel that struck him at United Steel in McAlpine St in Wigram just after 2pm on Monday.
