Two killed, one in a critical condition, after Sunday’s crash

Two more Samoans were killed violently in New Zealand and a third man remains in a critical condition after a head-on crash on State Highway 1 north of Christchurch on Sunday.

The victims were Tauvale Ene, 40, and Sione Faraimo, 30, “who were in a south-bound station wagon, collided with a north-bound ute towing a trailer near Pa Rd, south of Woodend,” a report said.

“The two men in the ute, believed to be brothers, were flown in a rescue helicopter to Christchurch Hospital. A Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman said one of the men was in a critical condition and the other was in a stable condition.”

Singapore Couple Killed Violently
On Thursday (May 4) two young Singapore nationals were violently killed when their rental van collided with an ute on State Highway 1 south of Dunsandel, about 40km southwest of Christchurch.  Ms Rena Ong and Mr Chen Zhi Hao were employees at technology firm Crestro, said the Strait Times.

NZ police had previously identified the victims incorrectly as 29-year old Ms Ong See Yee and 38-year-old Mr Chin Tze Hau.

They were killed in record time for foreign visitors arriving in New Zealand of about three hours.  Previous record was held by a French victim, Remi Morilleau, 27, who was killed in just under four hours after landing in Auckland airport.

The crashes have raised Canterbury’s [reported] road toll for 2017 to 21, the highest to date since 2003 and second only to Waikato’s 23. Last year, 31 people died on Canterbury roads. Police have conceded they may need a new approach.”

Correction: Young couple from Singapore killed in record time on NZ death roads

The victims, believed to by Dutch tourists [unconfirmed,] were killed in a head-on crash between a Jucy rental van and an ute on State Highway 1, south of Dunsandel, about 40km south of Christchurch just after 1pm on Thursday.

The victims, aged in their mid 20s to early 30s, are said to have arrived in New Zealand about two hours earlier.

Driver of the other vehicle has sustained non-life threatening injuries.

At least two people killed on the same spot four years ago, fate of other victims unknown
Gaurav Bhabhera, aged 28, an Indian national, and Marae Judy Dean, aged 52, of Ashburton, driver of the second vehicle involved in the head-on crash were killed. Mr Bhabhera’s wife, Jaina Bhabhera, remained in a critical condition in Christchurch Hospital’s intensive care unit, some three days after the crash. Her fate is currently unknown.

Police implicitly accused the Indian victim of making the exact same mistake: “Sergeant Jones says Police are not speculating on the cause of the crash at this stage, but investigations are looking at possible contributing factors including unfamiliarity with conditions and driver distraction.”  http://www.police.govt.nz/news/release/names-bankside-crash-victims-released
