Heavy rains, strong winds causing widespread disruption to transport, localised flooding and slips  –MetService

A state of emergency has been declared in Timaru due to the threat of rising rivers forcing more water into flooded areas, as the southern Canterbury city receives the entire month of July worth of rain in just 8 hours.

Up to 200mm of rain could fall in Canterbury and Dunedin through Saturday, while floodwaters are already threatening homes in the towns of Ashburton, Timaru, Rakaia, Methven and St Andrews.

Homes in Ashburton and Oamaru were flooded Friday morning as rising floodwaters submerged streets and bridges.

Emergency officials urged South Canterbury residents living near flood-prone areas to prepare for evacuation.

Many incoming and departing flights to and from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch and Dunedin have been cancelled due to “extreme weather”…

Murder in Kinloch

Taupo Police insist they will continue to investigate the death of a 48-year-old man in Kinloch last night. A 38-year-old woman, said to be the victim’s  partner, who was unaccounted for has now been located at a nearby property. Extreme cold kills second homeless man

Police have identified the  homeless man who was found dead, huddled under his sleeping bag at the back of  Manurewa Methodist Church. He was the second known such death of a homeless person in two weeks as a polar blast grips the nation.

A UK paedophile paediatrician who has been jailed for child pornography offences, worked (!) at Southland Hospital, Dunedin Hospital and Palmerston North Hospital at various times between 1996 and 20111, with impunity.

Walsh pleaded guilty at Exeter Crown Court on Monday 20 March to 17 charges which included 9 counts of distributing indecent images of children and 6 counts of making indecent images of children. Police insist investigating alleged sexual assault in Mahia

“Wairoa Police are investigating an alleged sexual assault on Ormond Drive, Mahia Beach, in the morning on Wednesday 19th July. A young woman was allegedly assaulted by an unknown male while she was exercising on the beach, opposite the Mahia Golf Club.”
