Police admit blame for 62 percent of police car crashes in the past year

Police staff were to blame for about 500 out of 810 police car crashes in the 12 months to until June 2015.

Official documents obtained by RNZ show police were involved in 810 crashes from June 2014 until June 2015.

“In 469 of the crashes, the incidents were recorded as “damage only” to the police cars involved.”

Police Association president, Greg O’Connor, has pinned the blame on a rise in more offenders “having a go” at fleeing police, according to report.

The report did not disclose number of drivers and/or passengers killed or seriously injured as a result police car chases.

There are about 3,100 police cars on the roads, according to a report.
